The real meaning of Arepo Sator, the magic square

... Most of the knowledge we have recently acquired is only the rediscovery of truths that were already well known to the Ancients. Only by accepting this matter-of-fact can we come to explain some enigmas of human history.

by Teodoro Brescia

Original Holism is a very ancient culture, perhaps the oldest that Mankind knows. Its biggest traces have been found in the Chinese Taoist culture (to which acupuncture belongs, a medical treatment that has been strongly revalued today by science) and in the Hebrew-cabbalistic culture[1]. The O.H. was part of a mythical antediluvian civilization (Atlantis?). Over 6000 similar legends have been collected from cultures far distant, as to place and time, from one another, which tell about the same huge flood and a people “that came from the waters”, and there are traces of that ancient culture in all these civilizations.

The O.H. was a sacred science that, in fact, European peoples (Arians) already knew, and that for thousands of years has been handed down to our days mainly by initiation (inside masonic movements in the West, in religions and in the theoretical body of “alternative” medicine in the East).

In ancient times, though, this knowledge was handed down not only by word of mouth and ritually, but also by building special temples (sacred geometry). Such structures, from the most sophisticated and colossal (pyramids) to the most primitive and simple ones (monoliths), have been found in all the oldest historical civilizations we know (Egyptian, Babylonian, Jewish, Chinese, Tibetan, African and pre-Colombian, from Mexico to Cambodia).

They are all religious-funerary structures with clear connections with the stars, real astronomical observatories. Considering the star references of such structures, it has been proved that already 3000 years before Christ some of these peoples knew the calculation of the porecession of the equinoxes, the slow and apparent motion of the earth’s axis of 1° every 72 years approximately ( a disacovery that official History still artributes to Hipparch of Nicaea, a Greek astronomer and mathematician who lived between 190 and 120 B.C.). How could they have such knowledge of the stars? And why were they so keen in wanting to hand that down, for thousands of years (though, sometimes, with “transcription” mistakes), more than their medical culture (acupuncture, for example)?

Well, today, perhaps, we have understood the reason why: according to that sacred science (which, like the Chinese medicine that was part of it, was a science of cycles), they stated they were able to calculate also the cycles of the reincarnation od souls, at least of the “greatest” ones. In the same way as it still occurs today about the Dalai Lama in Tibet (the monks state they can foresee his birth and then find him), so, also in the Bible and in the same Gospel one “ understands “ the existence of this sacred science when it is related, for instance, that the comimng of Moses and Jesus Christ himself was “foreseen” (the Three Wise Men, or Magi, who were esotericists and alchemists coming from the East, were “led by the comet”). Jesus’ birth itself, described “between two animals, the ox and the donkey”, seems to be an evident mistake of translation from Greek: it was written that he would be born between two zoon, which means animals in Greek, but it also means, by the way, signs of the zodiac (signs that are also reopresented with animal figures).

It is “a matter of fact” that the Greek knew the zodiac and used this word to designate it: The Bible of the Seventy, the oldest Greek version of the Old Testament (“Seventy”, as it was the work of 70 translators according to tradition, 72 according to others), was translated from Hebrew (and by Hellenistic Jews) during the period 270-100 B.C.; it contained also original texts later considered apocryphal. Greece, already in the 6th century B.C., at the time of Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes, had long received «from the East (Egyptians and Babylonians) a great deal of scientific notions about arithmetic, geometry and astronomy»[2] and therefore also astrological concepts and terms, considering that astronomy and astrology were inseparable for the ancients.

Besides, only with the Council of Constantinople (553 A.D.) the Church decided to considerf heretical the concept of reincarnation that the Fathers of the Church ( who used only the Greek Bible of the Seventy) instead considered true. The Vulgate, the Latin edition of the Bible (It. Volgare), was stated authentic only long after, by the Council of Trent (1545-1563 A.D.)[3].

The early Christians, the Fathers of the Church, used a fish and the Greek letters XP as symbols of Christianity. For St. Augustine “Christ is the living fish in the abyss of mortality, as in deep swaters” (De Civitate Dei XVIII, 23). Beside that, fish, ichthys in Greek was considered the acrostic of Iesous Christos Theou (H)yios Soter (Jesus Crist son of God the Saviour). It was the Roman persecution that made the Christian communities adopot the cross, an instrument of torture and death in the Empire, on which Jesus was sacrificed. The oldest cross known seems to date back to the 4th century ande is standing in the porch of St.Sabina church in Rome, on the Aventine, attached to the convent where the government of Dominicans sits.

Moreover, the Law of the Spirit, that is, «the six-point star...is one of the symbols that the early Christians connected with Christ and which was called Exagram, or Monogram of Christ»[4].

The relation between zodiacal eras and precessions is direct: about “every 2160 years. The Spring equinox moves back one sign”. From 2000 B.C. to the year 0 (Jesus’s birth) we were in the Aries era, Jesus, then, was born between two zodiacal eras, the era of Aries and that of Pisces (the “fisher of Souls”).

But there is still quite a lot more. The most important law of Original Holism is the law of the Spirit (which would rule also the cycles or reincarnation of the souls ). It is called Exagram or law of the six elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water and spirit) in the Chinese  culture, and Shield of David, or Salomon’s seal, in the Jewish culture, and is represented like this (pic. 1):

Pic.1 – Law of the 6 Elements (left), Salomon’s Seal (right)

(To find again the law of the esagramma also in the Chinese culture has been before the important discovery of the PLSO approximately the O.O., that is the existence of one of an original civilization that joined East and the West).

The O.H. was the science of the cycles which stated that all its principles (including the law of exagrams)  were analogical, that is they were held good for all smal and big cycles of fine energy. The energy of the spirit, which, according to old texts, would run in precise channels, the famous meridians of acupuncture (which would bind the soul to the body), runs through all our internal organs, forming  a network that, according to the O. H., takes the shape of an exagram.

This network binds the organs together in 6 pairs (each marked by a vertex of the star) and divided into trigrams or triangles (as in pic. 1). The whole human body (and so, by anology, also every phenomenon of the whole universe) is supoposed to be made of a right exagram and a left[5] one, symmetrical to each other (just like the internal organs of the human body: right and left lungs, right and left kidneys, etc.). So, on the whole, every complete cycle of any phenomenon would be made exactly of 24 elements (two exagrams of 12 elements each).

Astrologically it is said that the oldest era of Mankind was the Pisces era, 24 to 22 thousand years B.C. (25.920 years as to Steiner’s cultural years) and that, with the coming of Jesus Christ, a new Pisces era has started. In other words, just as stated in the O.H., the 12 phases (of 2000 years each) of an entire astronomical cycle were completed. The New Era was born with Christ, and we just made the Year 0 coincide with it.

Besides, every zodiacal era lasts 2.160 years (we said, in fact, that “the Spring equinox moves back one sign about every 2.160 years”) and the zodiacal signs are 12. The Chinese medicine, though, tells us that every one of these phases is double (the elements are 24 in all, 12 and 12 symmetrically) Plus, in ancient times, the Chinese day, like zodiacal eras, was not divided in 24 hours, but in 12 pairs of 12 hours each[6]. It is not by pure chance that in all ancient religions and initiatory and therefore esoteric (secret) cultures connected with the Originl Holism, both in their sacred texts and megalithic structures (from the Egyptian pyramids to the temple of Angkor Vat in Cambodia) “one number” recurs over again: 108 or 1.080, or 10.800. Now, 1.080 is the exact half of 2.160, that is the year value of one of the 24 phases[7].

However, that is not sufficient. There is another mystery hidden inside those structures. Why, for instance, were the pyrmids, like the temple of Angkor, according to scientifical tests, built in far-apart periods (3000 B.C. and 1.150 A.D. respectively) but, by the precession calculation, their astronomical structures point at the stars of 11-13000B.C.?  Many scholars think that history should be re-written and those structures were built much earlier, round about 12000 B.C.

Besides, science itself has proved that just round 11-13000 B.C. there was a vast glaciation followed by flood of most, perhaps, part of the Earth. One wonders, though, why and how they could have built such works in such an epoch?

The most likely theory, which would  reconcile science and antropology, might be as follows: the Original Holism, as we have explaned, was the “science” of the cycles (of the meridian energy, of the seasons, souls, hours) The survivors of the flood, “the peoples coming from the sea”, when they were able to organize themselves in greater civilizations, able to write or rebuild works useful to their sacred science (we are in about 3000 B.C. with the coming of Indoeuropean peoples and languages), made structures that did not point at the stars as they showed in their time, but at those of 11-13000 B.C.. The message that, more than any other message (medicine included), they handed down to the peoples and their descendants (us included) was to sound approximately like this: when the pointers return in line with the stars, another cycle of the Earth has closed and a new glacial era, or perhaps an asteroid, is about to come with a following flood!

There is one further point to get clear: why should a catastrophe occur in the middle of a cycle and not at the end (or at the start) of an era? If, in fact, every macroera, according to that ancient knowledge and to astronomy, is made of 24000 years, since we have such references as 11-13000 B.C., or 10500 B.C., we could even think (considering the gap of 160 over 2160) that we are in about the middle of the cycle (12000 years). What happens in the middle of the cycles according to the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)?

There occurs a transit between yin and yang (represented by taiji - pic. 2), that is the full exchange of energy from the top to the bottom part of the exagram (from one triangle to the other: pic.1), perhaps a twist and energetical renewal of the Cycle: from black to white, from matter to energy, from cold to hot, as to the TCM (from ice to its thawing?): “...Nothing dies out, everything changes” (Lavoisier). Seasons, ecosystems, human biorhythms and, perhaps, the same earth needs to be recycled and regenerate itself.

Certainly the astronomy of the ancients (Egyptians, Babylonians, Sumerians, Chinese, Indians from India, etc.) was much more astrological than astronomical (which were, however, inseparable branches in ancient times); it is also true they believed the world was rectangular. But it is true, too, that Chaldees[8], Egyptians and Chinese are generally considered the first astronomers; that about 3000 B.C., for the first tome, the year of 365 days was adopted just in Egypt and China; it is true again that Egyptians knew the heliacal rising of Sirius, which marked the coming flooding of the Nile, and the sothiacal period of 1460 years when their calendar (apparently imperfect being of 365 days without the “odd” ones) would then go back in line with the astronomical co-ordinates of Sirius; that the Shu Ching, one of the canonical texts reported by Confucius (557-479 B.C.), gives the position of the stars as to the equinoxical and sosticial points that refers to the 3rd millemnium B.C. . All dates, as we can see, take us back to 3000 B.C., to the Indoeuropeans and a new start of the history of Mankind after nthe Flood. Just as with the exagram of CTM, so the Egyptian had divided the human body into 12 parts, and given each of them a governing astrological sign; the Jews had 12 signs as spiritual guides to Jacob’s 12 children; the Chinese, besede the already quoted day divided into 12 pair- hours, had astronomical cycles divided into 12 terrestrial branches and 12 zodiacal signs (beside 10 celestial branches related to the law of 5 elements).

So, this makes one think that the Original Holism was the mother culture which “all” other civilizations come from, and that, after the catastrophe, there were, obviously, losses, changes and twistings, in time, as to the original truth. Once this is brought back, though, it becomes easier to see its traces in various civilizations, and, finally, it becomes something quite different from looking for vague and often unlike resemblances among them, as it happened with other researches on ancient cultures. What stays certain, then, is the antropological discovery: now we know how “the Ancients” thought.

History tells us that astronomy, in its new real form, “restarted” with the Greek, and the first of the greatest was Thales of Miletus, born in 624 B.C.

The astronomical message, however, remains the most important they wanted to leave us all. It is still to be proved how scientifical those ancient theories are, and if we have, really and fully, understood them all.

What we know is that, thanks to the discovery of O.H., we are beginning to understand the way of thinking of the Ancients, and we can get back a universal spiritual and religious vision, never so useful as today, in an era when we need some new planetary ethics.

As an upteenth demostration of all that, here is another example of how the Original Holism allow us the easy decodification of another enigma: the famous Magic Square[9](pic. 3).

Found in Pompei in 1925, and then complete in 1936, it was used by early Christians (in the persecution period) as a “manifesto” and symbol of their creed. This is stated by Baratono[10], who understands that the term rotas refers, in the literary meaning of wheel, to the symbol of the exagram, or monogram of Christ. But the problem of this old pun has been mainly the meaning of two words: AREPO (which cannot be found in any ancient lsnguage, but someone wanted forcely dated back to a Celtic word meaning “cart”) and SATOR (which in Latin means “creator” or “sower”).

So, we are before a Latin inscription with an improbable Celtic word in it, which translates more or less like this: the Sower on his cart skilfully drives the wheels. What does it mean?

Actually, the Original Holism makes it all easier for us. To start with, we know now that the laws of this ancient sacred science (taiji, pentagram, exagram, swastika, etc.) are all forms written with a circle. That is, according to this ancient knowledge, every phenomenon, every work of creation contains (tenet) circles (rotas). This, then, is the basic idea that binds all the truths and laws of creation: opera tenet rotas (the works of creation contain wheels).

Besides, the laws concerning the spirit and Christ is the exagram (also called Monogram of Christ). Christians could not draw it clearly because of persecutions, so they made up, probably, the magic square.

The exagram  is graphically made of two triangles (trigrams) interwined together. These triangles are exactly symmetrical in shape, colour (one black and one white), and even in the way they are drawn (as the ancient CTM tells us). That is, if one triangle is drawn from top to right, the other is drawn the other way round, from bottom to left. The word trigram  comes from Greek and literally means three characters, writings or lines. In other words, the magic square is still an exagram, but, instead of being drawn with two triangles (three lines together), it is drawn with words forming two symmetrical trigrams (three words together), just like two triangles, and interwined  together with a word that holds (tenet) them together as one. Tenet is the only word that is not repeated in the square, as it is the only one that can be read exactly the same from each end and side, and, so, it is valid for both trigrams. It is not by pure chance, either, that the lines written the other way round (sator arepo tenet) come first in the square. In fact, the TCM tells us that its energetic cycles go from the black triangle to the white one and not the other way round. It is called “yin-yang” (black and white) and not “yang-yin”. Therefore, as the points of the same triangles show, we should read the first trigram from bottom to top and from right to left, and the second one from top to bottom, left to right (pic. 4).

So, the magic square is, as it seems, a composition of two simple word-trigram built according to the logic of the two triangles of the exagram. But, one will object that the exagram should have a circle, too, in order to be complete. How does the square represent the circle? Right, the inscription reads: every work contains circles, which means, as it tells us clearly, that it (and what it stands for) must contain a circle as well. Actually, the magic square draws a complete exagram by means of a verbal and graphic use of these words.

Besides, this exagram is simetimes shown with the points if the triangles turned to the right and left, as well as to the top and bottom. In fact, the magic square is symmetrical also if read from left to right.

Seen in this light, the words arepo and sator, both non existant and of uncertain translation, are actually such because they mean nothing, they are the graphic opposit of the words opera and rotas.

Finally, the Magic Square and the Magic Door (1655), which is in Rome in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, on the top of which we can see the same exagram as in picture 2, represent the same thing. This proves that the Original Holism, though most of it has gone lost, has been handed down in history up to our days in partial and different forms[11].

We could say a lot more about the O.H. and the ancient and great enigmas it can now explain. For the moment, we will add one final thing. Still thanks to it, the Chinese Traditional Medicine is now getting back its ancient long-thought-lost theories, and by that it recovers a new consistency between theory and therapeutic practice.

This will allow, in a near future, greater scientific advances. Besides, the CTM itself is the only alternative medicine that has been revalued by science today, worldwide. Even in Italy, a country academically unwilling to accept “novelties”, acupuncture has long now been introduced as master, and the first complete master in CTM will start in 2005.

This is only a minimum part of the discoveries that the PLSO is allowing us to realize and  publishe, since 2000, in various volumes and articles.

[1] The first steps of these discoveries and of the new line of research that ensued from them were made in 1999-2000, and published in the book The Tao of the Spirit, Hermes edition Rome 2000 (rewarded with “The 2001 Cultural Prize” in the Science Sector by the President of the Council of Ministers). The same year the author started the research project called P.L.S.O. (www.lascienzaolostica.com). The discovery of the law of the 6 elements, that is the Star of David in the Chinese culture and its consequent decoding (this discovery proves also the existence of an antidiluvian civilization which was common and prior to both), has been the first important discovery of PLSO (see picture 2).
